Rastavac is shocked: “War brings out your best and worst self, the world suffers”

by

“When the war ends you understand that life is short”… One of his last sentences Milan Rastavacwho wanted to share his own experiences from the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia more than 20 years ago.

At the time, the Serbian technician was a soldier and was in the war zones, helping people in need. And with what he narrates, with his experiences and his words about the situations one experiences in the war, it is really shocking.

Details of what Milan Rastavac said on the podcast of Asteras Tripolis:

“War is not the solution to problems. Since the solution after the war will always be found, the most important thing is for the people to avoid the pain that war brings. I can talk about this from experience because I was in the NATO bombing of the war in Serbia in the spring of 1999. Despite a very difficult period, you become a participant and you see a lot of people suffering. I served my term of one year and because of the war I stayed more than three months. Very difficult situation with stress, strange while I was going home I found myself serving more, but I had to do it and respect it. I do not know if he knows the phrase that says “War succeeds and brings out of you both your best and your worst”, and I found this in war because I saw at this time helping each other, we were looking to see what it is better, which is not the case in peacetime.

There is always a kind of pride, when you defend something they want if they take it from you, you have the same common goal as your compatriots. I remember in Serbia many did not support Milosevic, but when the first bomb fell, everyone supported him. If we as a country want to replace someone it is our right, but not outsiders to tell us what to do.

On the other hand, a big and important part is the destruction not only material but also emotional, buildings, bridges, shops, important because you may have planned to build a bridge that took you time and suddenly in a few days everything falls apart. I’m lucky I did not lose any of my family, but I did have a lot of friends that I unfortunately had.

For some, war is war, for others they will try to take advantage of it to get some benefits that in times of peace they would not have. The value system in times of war is changing and is not positive. I speak as a Serb, of my generation we have known the war, it is part of life, but we have managed to overcome the reefs.

War is never the way to solve problems because people suffer. I can talk about some experience I had. It was the moment the bombs exploded in an area, I was very close. It was the bombs that fired thousands of spears that killed. And we had to help people who were injured, to transport them. Some had died, some cars were burning. At that moment you understand the horror of war.

This experience gives you maturity, to see life with a different eye, life is too short to waste it on trifles. Finding ways to help your fellow man, to do something good for the other not because you are expecting something in return, but because I want to help and make him feel better.

“To conclude, as much energy as we need to waste is worth it so that we do not have a war because it must disappear and never exist again.”
