Explaining what it is about, the minister pointed out that it is not a factory like the ones we have in mind. “In essence, it will be a space where we will gather on the one hand problems we have in the public and private sector and on the other hand start-ups, fresh minds, but also computing power, because artificial intelligence needs powerful computers, so we can give solutions to real problems. The industrial buildings will be in Lavrio, where we will also house our national supercomputer, “Daedalos”. The tenders are over, we are in the phase of evaluating the proposals, so by the end of 2025 we should be set up, to be able to activate this whole ecosystem”.

“Social media is profiting from the addiction it creates in children”

As for what the government is studying about the addiction of minors in social mediaMr. Papastergiou said that there is clearly a problem, as addiction concerns both adults and minors, whose self-regulation is still being formed and for this it becomes necessary to take measures. “Right now some social media are profiting from the addiction they create in children, who are constantly thumbing their thumbs to watch videos many times with inappropriate content. Europe is taking measures, what Australia has done is to cut off social media for under 16s, France has said that under 15s parents are now responsible for what children will see.”

However, as he said, the most difficult of all is age verification, something for which we can also take measures as Europe, referring also to the parental control solutions where the parent goes to the child’s mobile phone. “It’s not easy. When one child has it and the one next to him doesn’t, grumblings and fights ensue. On the other hand, we have the children’s ages just as we have our own ages in the digital wallet. The thought is about how you can create some first defenses on the child’s mobile phone, but this is a half-measure, because as long as the providers continue to serve inappropriate content, the kid will find a way to get in. However, if the providers start creating morally ethical content for minors, let’s discuss it, otherwise we may have to go as far as a ban.”

Finally, as for meteorology and on how experts will be able to gain access to more data, the minister emphasized that if someone does not have data, local phenomena like that of Rhodes cannot be caught. “Exactly one week ago, as a ministry, we handed over 80 new meteorological stations to EMY, and another 30 more specialized ones are coming, for electrical discharges, water level measurements, etc., but the most important thing is that from 2025 onwards we include in our calculations the data that will come from our microsatellite system.”
