Party circles are commenting on the decision of Christos Rammos not to be a candidate for President of the Republic after the proposal of the New Left due to the attacks he received.

“We respect and understand the decision of Mr. Rammos. Mr. Rammos has received an unprecedented slanderous attack from the Maximos House, which wants one thing: The silence of the wiretapping scandal”, New Left sources said, underlining that their proposal “preferred the defense of the rule of law and democracy”. “And as such it had all the characteristics to receive broad support from the left and democratic opposition parties,” they added, noting that “unfortunately, these forces chose the path of small-party interest instead of erecting a wall of protection against the vulgar attacks by the systems in and around the Megaros Maximos”.

“Thus, they undermined the possibility of a strong candidacy for the Presidency of the Republic. They chose not to clash with the Mitsotakis regime,” the same sources emphasized and concluded: “We will persist: To defend society, the rule of law and democracy against an authoritarian and arrogant government.”

Haritsis: Our proposal disturbed the power system of Megaros Maximos

Announcement about Mr. The leader of the New Left, Alexis Haritsis, also issued a letter in which he states the following:

“The statement of Mr. Rammou honors our party, the New Left, and me personally. I thank him from the bottom of my heart.

The proposal of the New Left, as mentioned by Mr. Rammos, had a clear political rationale: highlighting the huge issue of citizens’ lack of trust in institutions and the need to defend the rule of law.

Our proposal upset the power system of the Megaros Maximus which indulged in an unprecedented immoral attack on Mr. Rammo and towards the New Left.

However, he also defeated the forces of the democratic opposition who, unfortunately, did not erect a wall of defense and support for the candidacy of Mr. Rammu. And their responsibility for today’s development is decisive.

It is truly saddening and infuriating that the mainstream political system, the forces of the cross-party consensus, are attempting to silence every voice that stands up for the big, critical institutional issues facing the country.

This is the problem of our Republic today.

We will persist. The fight for the defense of society, the rule of law and democracy continues.”
