Heading towards the election of the new European Ombudsman, it is very important to agree on the guarantees that should govern his actionhe said, beginning his intervention.

Firstly“, continued Mr. Beleris, “not to discount issues of Democracy, Rule of Law and Human Rights, even when these concern states that are on the path to accession” and immediately added: “There are no discounts in these matters. In my own adventure, unfortunately, this sensitivity never appeared».

Secondly“, he said, “not to succumb to pressures based on uncontrolled entitlement and not to be instrumentalized in the name of Civil Society. Especially in immigration, this happened a lot. It must not be repeated.”

So far, what we have seen is a targeting of specific member states, under legal pretexts and without substantive evidence“, he noted, emphasizing that “as an institution, the European Ombudsman must act based on his mandate».

It is noted that, today, MEPs discussed the Annual Report of the European Ombudsman for 2003, while, tomorrow, the vote will take place for the election of the new Ombudsman, who will take up duties from February 2025.
