What is the procedure for electing the President of the Republic in the Parliament – What applies if there is not a majority of MPs in the votes
Tomorrow, Saturday morning, at 11:00, the Plenary Session of the Hellenic Parliament is convened for the election of a new President of the Republic.
The House of “300” is called upon to choose between four proposals submitted to the presidium of the Parliament. Specifically, between the former president of the Parliament, Konstantinou Tasoula proposed by the ND, of former ministers Tassos Giannitsi and Lucas Katseli which were proposed by PASOK and SYRIZA, respectively, and the writer Kostas Kyriakou who was proposed by KO of “Niki”.
This is the first of – at most – five roll call votes, provided for by the Constitution, for the election of the supreme ruler of the state.
According to the country’s Charter, in tomorrow’s (first) vote, the President of the Republic is elected by the person who gathered the majority of two-thirds of the total number of deputies (200). If this majority is not gathered, a second vote will be held, after five days, in which the same majority (200) is required, while, in a possible third vote, again after five days, a three-fifths majority (180) is required.
If not achieved not even in the third vote this increased majorityvoting is repeated after five days and the one who obtained the absolute majority of the total number of deputies (151) is elected President of the Republic and if even this majority is not achieved, the vote is repeated after five days and the one who obtained the relative majority is elected President of the Republic.
According to today’s data, election of a new President of the Republic expected to take place in fourth votewhich will be held on February 12.
The candidacy that gathers the most support is that of Mr. Tasoula, who is expected to be voted by the 156 ND MPs, as well as by some independent MPs, such as Mr. Antonis Samaras and Mr. Marios Salmas.
It is noted that the term of office of the current President of the Republic, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, ends on March 13, 2025.
