International and regional developments were discussed, focusing on Ukraine, the Middle East, including Syria, diplomatic sources report
With his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan, Foreign Minister George Gerapetritis met in Geneva. According to diplomatic sources during the meeting, the informal enlarged meeting on the Cyprus issue was evaluated at the meeting and the way they were better implemented.
“International and regional developments were also subject, focusing on Ukraine, the Middle East, including Syria,” the same sources said.
“They discussed the next Supreme Cooperation Council, which will be held in April and the next meeting of the two ministers, which will take place at the meeting of the Foreign Ministers of NATO Member States on April 3-4.”
After participating in the plenary session of the informal meeting on the Cyprus issue in an expanded form, Mr Gerapetritis said:
We were in Geneva today, in the informal five -member for the Cyprus issue.
Following coordinated efforts by the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek Government, the Secretary General of the United Nations has recently taken over, as a major UN priority, the restart of informal discussions on the Cyprus issue.
The debate, which took place, was based on the areas referring to the measures to build confidence between the parties, as in particular the issues of degrading, environmental protection, youth, cemeteries, etc.
It was decided that a personal envoy would be appointed for the next steps of discussions by the Secretary General of the United Nations.
It is extremely important that at the moment the Cyprus issue is at the forefront of the United Nations agenda. There will be a continuation of the informal meetings, both bilaterally and with the FIGHT Format.
We expect that there will be a new five -member meeting at the end of July.
We realize that, despite the fact that the position of the Turkish Cypriot side is in another line in relation to the framework, which determines the UN Security Council resolutions, it is extremely important to have the dialogue to build trust.
The only solution is to reunite the island.
