Will she stay in her post and under Mertz? In one of the latest, de facto, public appearances in Berlin, Nancy Fezer, the Interior Ministry of Interior by the Social Democrats, made her term of office focusing on her actions in the field of immigration policy. As he characteristically said, the goal of the Solds government was achieved, that is, to enhance the attraction of labor force from abroad and at the same time to combat irregular migration while fighting the traffic networks.

Some data presented by Nancy Fezer: Migration of specialized workers increased by 2021 by 77%. The number of asylum seekers, on the other hand, has declined significantly in the first quarter of 2025 and by 35% compared to the corresponding quarter of 2024 and by 49% compared to 2023.

At the same time, the number of returns asylum applicants has increased by 55%. After the introduction of border checks in the fall of 2023, more than 50,000 were repaired and about 2,000 traffickers were arrested by the German authorities.

‘Non -negotiable’ the asylum right

Nancy Fezer wanted to defend asylum on the other hand, which he said about the Social Democrats is “non -negotiable”, especially when it is a result of war and crisis.

As he said: “On the one hand there is the individual right to asylum when someone is being politically persecuted and has the right to seek asylum in us. I do not think there is any reason for discussion that in this case that is not very common, asylum should be given.

Shots to Russia and Belarus

“On the other hand, the issue of large migratory flows and countries that are tooling the immigration is raised. We are actually observing such a situation with countries as countries as Belarus that sends immigrants to Poland, Russia to Finland. There, for example, we need an effective protection of European borders, “Nancy Fezer said days ago at the same press conference in Berlin.

Beyond that on the issue of possible returns/expulsion asylum seekers at the German border, according to the negotiations on the formation of a government, it should be coordinated with neighboring countries, which so far does not seem simple. Nancy Fezer, however, says:

“The Austrian Chancellor has spoken about it, the Polish Prime Minister is also positive in taking responsibility for them there. In my opinion, of course, it is always better and more effective to cooperate in this field between neighboring states. See for example the case of reducing asylum seekers who reach the Czech border. “

Will the current Ministry of Interior be the next one?

According to a report by the SZ newspaper, it is not excluded that the current (service) of the Interior Ministry of the Social Democrats is the next interior minister in a Government with Chancellor of Christian Democrat Friedrich Mertz.

According to the report, the Christian Union (CDU/CSU) seems to want the critical interior minister, but at the same time, Nancy Fezer from the SPD has also proven to be in favor of a strict immigration policy and asylum policy.

As the report notes: “The time of negotiations is over. Mertz wants to set up new censorship until the end of April and at the latest in early May. Until then, the Christian Union and Social Democrats must have settled in the government coalition agreement. “
