Under the chairmanship of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the United Nations Security Council convenes at 17.00 High -level Open Debate (Signature Event) on ‘Strengthening maritime security through international cooperation for global stability’which will take place at the headquarters of the International Organization, under the presidency of our country at the Security Council for May.

UN Secretary -General Antonio Guterres will provide information, while Mrs Melina Travlou, President of the Hellenic Shipowners’ Union and the Professor of the University of Copenhagen and Researcher at UNIDIR (UNDIP) will participate as rapporteurs. The meeting is aimed at a strategic exchange of views between Member States for holistic Dealing increasing threats in sea securitysuch as piracy, cross -border organized crime, illegal trafficking of weapons, drugs and people, illegal fishing, trafficking in human beings, terrorist acts and attacks on critical marine infrastructure.

Will also emphasize the need for Strengthening International Cooperation (including corporate relationships) in the surveillance of the maritime space for the purpose of developing capacity and the use of new technologies, coordinating medium surveillance and exchange of information. There will be references to risk management to coordinate actions to protect critical infrastructure, enhancing durability and timely measures. The consequences of climate change in sea security will also be highlighted and the environmental impacts of illegal actions will be evaluated.

At the center of the discussion will also raise critical questions about the Application of international legal frameworks such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the UNCLOS sea, the prioritizing needs of abilities and the role of technology in the treatment of organized crime at sea.

Greece, taking on an active role as a chairing country, seeks to strengthen the role of the Security Council in promoting maritime security as a foundation for world peace, prosperity and development.
