Nikos Androulakis went to the offices of the Greek Community, where he discussed with President Andreas Vafiadis and the other members of the Board of Directors, continuing his visit to Alexandria.
“You are the first opposition leader to visit our community and this shows Greece’s interest, that he is with us and is watching our work,” were the words that Mr Vafiadis addressed the PASOK president. For his part, Mr. Androulakis emphasized the issues of education: “No child in the world – Greek or non -Greek – who wants to learn Greek, deprive him of this opportunity. DNA of every people is his language. We need to take advantage of all new technologies. After the financial crisis we have a new generation of Greeks living abroad and we must guarantee that their children will be carriers of Greek learning. “
Mr. Androulakis toured the Greek schools and the nursing home. In his statements he then pointed out, among other things, that he had the honor of meeting today Patriarch Theodore, here in Alexandria, at the roots of Hellenism, “a man who has provided much to the children of Africa and to the Orthodox faithful throughout the continent”.
He emphasized that “it is very important that the issue that has arisen with the Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai to be adjusted immediately. Because this monastery for centuries is now in this position. ” “None of those who have exercised power in this place here raised issues concerning either religious freedom or ownership,” he added. The PASOK president noted that “for this, we are asking the Egyptian government to respect the file it sent to UNESCO to join this monument into the list of world culture monuments.” “We have historical relations with the people of Egypt, with Alexandria, and all these issues must be resolved by mutual respect and understanding,” he said.
