By Egyptian counterpart of, Sameh Sukrimet today Monday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Nikos Dendias during his visit Cairo.

As the Greek Minister announced in a statement after the meeting, the focus was on the consequences caused by the war in Ukraine but also the strategic relationship between Greece and Egypt in the context of developments in the Eastern Mediterranean.

“Greece has a huge interest in the stability and progress of Egypt, it considers it as one of its most important, strategic allies,” said Mr. Dendias.

At the same time, the Greek Foreign Minister interjected that “Greek foreign policy is a foreign policy of principles”, answering a journalist’s question

The statement of Nikos Dendias in detail

“I had a long meeting with the Egyptian Foreign Minister, my friend Sameh Shoukry.

First of all, I conveyed to President Sisi the warm and cordial greetings of the Greek Prime Minister, Mr. Mitsotakis. Beyond that, we talked about the crisis in Ukraine, the very big problems of the food crisis that is being created as a result of the energy crisis.

We discussed how it also affects the Egyptian economy. As you know, Greece has a huge interest in the stability and progress of Egypt, it considers it as one of its most important, strategic allies.

We discussed in detail Libya, the situation created by the presence of two prime ministers, Mr. Dbaiba and Mr. Bashaga, and how we can coordinate our actions so that Libya is finally led to elections.

We discussed the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean, the need to enforce legality and international law, the International Law of the Sea. Mr. Shoukry was also kind enough to inform me of the talks he had at the Negev Desert meeting, which was attended by, as you know, the US Secretary of State, Mr Blinken.

I thanked him for the assistance that Egypt has provided to Greece in the framework of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and we agreed that Greece will appoint a Special Envoy, who will be able to address the issues that Turkey raises within this organization, in cooperation with friendly countries, such as Egypt, which clearly see Turkey’s motives behind the draft decisions it submits.

He also congratulated him on his presidency of Egypt at the Climate Change Conference. Greece will participate in every way. As you know, although we are a conservative government, we are also a green government. “Environmental issues are of great importance to the Mitsotakis government.”

JOURNALIST: Mr. Minister, you referred to this Conference, which took place in the Negev Desert with the participation of six Foreign Ministers, including Mr Blinken. We see that the crisis in Ukraine is also affecting developments in the wider region. Does this lead to an adjustment of Greek foreign policy goals in this region?

N. DENDIAS: You see, the Greek goals are always stable and are absolute goals: stability, security, respect for the independence and territorial integrity of the states. But I do not hide the fact that a major international crisis, such as the one caused by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, leads to the need to review tactics many times and to look at various issues from the beginning. This is happening even now. Nevertheless, I want to reiterate that Greek foreign policy is a foreign policy of principles. We will continue to advocate and support these principles.
