Letters to all the mayors and regional governors of the country, inviting them to actively contribute to the implementation of the new Road Traffic Code, was sent by Deputy Minister of Transport Konstantinos Kiranakis.
This move comes as a continuation of the vote of the new KOK and marks an overall political choice to enhance road safety, with an emphasis on prevention and not punishment.
As Mr. Kyranakis points out in his letter, “the new KOK is not just a legal review. It is our collective decision not to accept another reality that costs lives. ” “It is a” alliance of responsibility “between the state, the government and the citizens,” he says in his letter.
What does the letter include
The letter makes it clear that Local Government is called upon to use the existing and new possibilities provided by the legislative framework -from the application of speed limits and the installation of signals to the installation of cameras associated with the single fines. Specifically for the cameras, those municipalities and regions choose to participate, will also have a financial benefit, maintaining some of the revenue from the violations recorded.
Among the actions that municipalities are called upon to take on:
– Applying new speed limits,
– Installation and proper maintenance of pedestrian signals and passages to be visible and effective,
– Removal of dangerous billboards that distract drivers,
– Determination of sidewalks and mild traffic areas,
– The introduction of parking spaces for light personal electric vehicles (such as electric skates).
All of these actions, as highlighted in the text, require the contribution of the Local Authorities -“we want allies,” the Deputy Minister notes.
Classification of Municipalities at the end of 2025
At the end of the year, the Ministry of Transport will publish a ranking of Local Government bodies based on their progress and performance in the implementation of the new coke, rewarding the distinguished municipalities. It is a positive motivation, with the aim of enhancing transparency and efficiency at local application level.
In this letter, the political leadership of the Ministry of Transport sends the message that CMC reform is not only a matter of the state, but a collective bet that requires cooperation at all levels of governance.
The call was also accompanied by detailed information material with the key changes of the coke and new penalties, as well as instructions on the fields where the Local Authorities can immediately take action.
