The Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, announced that Greece has reached an agreement with Egypt regarding the future of the Monastery of Saint Catherine on Mount Sinai, which ensures its unaltered character in perpetuity.
In particular, during the debate in Parliament on foreign policy issues, the Prime Minister referred to the issue of the Holy Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai, which, as he said, occupied the public debate and unfortunately became the object of cheap exploitation by some who ignore both the elementary and the real facts. He emphasized that the issue of rights over the Monastery did not arise yesterday.
“Immediately after the latest developments, intensive consultations began between the two Foreign Ministers with the aim of resolving a centuries-old pending situation and today I can announce to the House that there has been a preliminary, common understanding between the two sides on this issue. It goes without saying that the Holy Sinaitic Brotherhood will have the last word, which, based on this common understanding, ensures the unaltered character of the Monastery in perpetuity. Any conversion of the Monastery as well as the rest of the places of worship is prohibited and care is taken for the stay of the monks. With this plan, the continuity of the Sinai Monastery is not only ensured, but now Sinai becomes one of the centers of Orthodoxy with the Greek state being present, practically present in an area of great value for Hellenism everywhere,” said the Prime Minister.
According to Reuters, a senior Greek Foreign Ministry official said the agreement would be signed in the coming weeks.
