With reference to his death Dionysis Savvopoulos started o Kyriakos Mitsotakis his interview with 100.3. “Today the day dawned and emotionally cloudy” emphasized the prime minister, pointing out that Dionysis Savvopoulos was perhaps the greatest songwriter of his generation while he was at the same time a sensitized citizen who did not hesitate to express his opinion on the commons and always asked us honestly as a people to look in the mirror.
“He personally honored me with his friendship so I feel special sadness today and on a deep personal level if I can say one thing, it would be that maybe he managed to unite us in his death and let us think a little that the path of Dionysos Savvopoulos was essentially identified with the path of post-political Greece with our advantages, with our disadvantages and let each of us take personal and collective strength from his lyrics to look ahead with more confidence. I believe that is what he himself would ask us to do“, he said.
Turning to the issue of the amendment for the monument to the Unknown Soldier, Mr. Mitsotakis noted:
“We should focus on the self-evident aspect of the provision, the need to protect an area of national memory. I don’t think this debate would happen in any other country in the world. Similar monuments exist everywhere that are protected and respected by society itself without requiring special legislative regulations. Here, unfortunately, in the context of the Greek particularity, we did not manage to achieve this and we are forced to introduce a regulation which, in my opinion, simply consolidates normality”.
He added that it is obvious that the right to assembly and protest can coexist with the protection of a sacred space. “We have such a place in our country. We don’t have a second one. While everyone can demonstrate and protest in any way they wish within the law anywhere else“, he underlined.
And he added that “passing by the Constitution we cannot say that we like this image and this was also the purpose of this legislative initiative and he emphasized that he believes that the implicit majority of Greek citizens also agree with this».
“From then on, the Minister of Defense with whom I had communicated personally before submitting the relevant order did not express any disagreement whatsoever on the content of the order. He co-signed it, he will vote today in the roll-call vote and the responsibility now passes to the ministry“, he pointed out. He emphasized that 6 other ministers did not attend and that it is not always customary for all co-competent ministers to attend.
As he said, what will be interesting “is to see if we can see the monument with a fresh look because really what is the problem with this monument? That essentially it is not clearly defined where the monument begins and where – I would say – the public space of the square ends. Maybe we can think of a solution for this that clearly defines the beginning of the monument and the end of the square». He stated that this is an idea that he intends to discuss with the minister and that the ministry has the ability to propose solutions on how the monument can be highlighted and protected.
“No Illegal Cargo Proved – Cover-Up Theory Collapsed”
Kyriakos Mitsotakis then wondered why this monument should be monopolized only by the protest against the Tempe accident. “And why wouldn’t we allow the dead from Mandra, Mati or any other tragedy to do the same,” he said. “And where does that end? Because we all understand that this is an attempt at political activism which was not actually started by the parents. Don’t kid us. They started from specific political spaces that instrumentalized parents to achieve a more general state of unrest.he added.
He also said that this issue also raises some broader ideological issues about how some political spaces and “specifically referring to the space of the Left, they have in the past appropriated the public space considering that their law had some kind of ideological superiority over the laws of the state».
“We saw the same phenomenon over and over again in the occupations of public universities. It’s nothing different“, he emphasized.
He reiterated after a related question that the government is not against any parent, on the contrary it sympathizes and the Justice has given a solution to the problem with exhumations to cover the last questions that may be on the mind of any desperate parent.
“We have not responded in a more absolute way to a virtual reality that was created with one purpose only: to accuse the government and me personally of allegedly covering something up. But when it was proved that there was no illegal cargo, the cover-up theory apparently collapsed” underlined Mr. Mitsotakis.
About Alexis Tsipras he said:
“Leader of the Official Opposition is Nikos Androulakis. Mr. Tsipras resigned as an MP, I was impressed by that. He could have participated in Parliament yesterday instead of posting on social media. If he himself chooses new political initiatives, I have absolutely no intention of commenting.”
As he said, “I didn’t expect anything else from the Left because they think they can adapt the laws of the state to their own voluntarism. Where was the right and far right yesterday? Mr. Velopoulos was absent yesterday because how could he combine the defense of the monument with the xylene theory that he first developed and supported. With PASOK, we met in Syntagma Square for we live in Europe, and now with an incomprehensible speech, Mr. Androulakis ends up becoming Mrs. Konstantopoulou’s tail. PASOK, which was with us to stay in Europe, has become a follower of Mrs Konstantopoulou and this is sad. I am not satisfied with the level of political dialogue.”
“If Mr. Venizelos believes that the electoral law should be changed, why doesn’t he come out and say it”
Commenting on ungovernability, the prime minister noted:
“I hear various supposedly serious people saying that the country has a problem of governability. No, the opposition has a problem with intergovernmentalism at the moment. The country has a stable government and is an exception in Europe. He has a government with a comfortable parliamentary majority with a strong popular mandate until the spring of 2027.”
“At the moment the government leads with more than double the percentage of the second party. We are not behind the first. Do a search of the polling percentages that ND was getting 3 months before the 2023 elections and we finally got 41%. The government must belong to all Greeks, although it is not elected by all Greeks. The government governs well, it has no problem passing bills and implementing its policy, I will tell Mr. Venizelos. If he thinks the electoral law should be changed, why doesn’t he come out and say it. I don’t believe it. Let those who talk about an alleged institutional crisis look at the reality.”
