“The day of the liberation of Thessaloniki in the Balkan Wars is a day of vindication of the unity and unity of the Greek people and the army and its leadership”emphasized the President of the Republic, Konstantinos Tasoulas, in a statement he made after the end of the official eulogy at the church of Agios Dimitrios.
Mr Tasoula’s full statement is as follows:
“Today, here in Thessaloniki, there are two great and famous holidays. A celebration of faith and a celebration of freedom. We celebrate Saint Demetrius the Great Martyr, the Patron Saint of Thessaloniki, the great guardian of Thessaloniki, who with self-sacrifice and bravery defended his Christian faith at the cost of his life during the terrible persecutions of Emperor Diocletian and Caesar Galerius. He is the most popular Saint, he is the Saint who always thinks and protects Thessaloniki.
And we celebrate today, at the same time, the celebration of freedom, the liberation of the city on the day of Saint Demetrius, like today in 1912 when the Protocol of Surrender of the city was signed by the Turkish military commander Tahsim Pasha and the Greek officer representatives of the Greek General Headquarters, lieutenant colonel Dousmanis and captain Metaxas.
This day of the liberation of Thessaloniki in the Balkan Wars is a day of vindication of the unity and unity of the Greek people and of the army and its leadership. The First Balkan War began on October 5 and during October many cities were liberated. And today, here in Thessaloniki, we honor its liberation, we honor the integration of Macedonia into the national body, thanks to the sacrifice of soldiers, officers and volunteers, which sacrifice brought victory.

We are inspired, honoured, remembered and exemplified by this victory. And know that this inspiration, this exemplification, this remembrance is not only about the past, it is mainly about the present and the future. Because when a people has such memories, has such examples, such as those of the liberation of Thessaloniki and the integration of Macedonia into Greece, they can look to the future with optimism, confidence and self-confidence. Happy birthday from Thessaloniki”.
