Message of energy upgrade and shielding of Greece sends the presence of the Prime Minister today in Alexandroupolis, for the official start of his work new LNG terminal in the city.
The event will be attended by the Greek Prime Minister and leaders of neighboring Balkan countries and in particular the President and Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev and Kiril Petkov, the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vuτςiτς, and the Prime Minister of Northern Macedonia, Dimitar Kovacevski.
For the same reason he is going to Alexandroupolis today and the President of the European Council, Charles Michel, giving the EU a foothold in support of this key energy project that is expected to become the energy gateway to Southeastern Europe. In fact, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Charles Michel and the prime ministers of the three Balkan countries will give speeches on the project and its prospects.
The meeting of the Balkan leaders will take place in order to jointly inspect the liquefied natural gas unit within the port, which is the result of a consortium of Greece and Bulgaria and in which the other two Balkan countries now want to play a role. A summit representation of the three Balkan countries, which demonstrates the strategic importance of the project for the diversification of sources of supply and their independence from Russian gas.
According to reports Many companies from neighboring countries are already rushing to close capacity at the Alexandroupolis station scheduled to open in 2023, as well as gas producers interested in selling gas to the Balkans.
Project of strategic importance
The project is considered of strategic importance to the Greek government and acquires even greater importance, given the international conditions of energy instability caused by the war in Ukraine.
This is a project that is able to diversify the mix of energy sources for the country and provide a solution to the problem that has arisen with the russian gas.
The project concerns the Independent Natural Gas System of Alexandroupolis, which is a modern, innovative and high-tech project. It consists of an offshore floating unit for the receipt, storage and gasification of liquefied natural gas and a system of submarine and land pipeline, through which the natural gas is forwarded to the National Gas Transmission System (NSF) and from there to final consumers.
The construction of the project has been undertaken the Greek company Gastrade and the Bulgarian BEH.
The LNG (liquefied natural gas) terminal of Alexandroupolis is impressive both in terms of its construction and mainly in terms of its usefulness, especially during the current period and conjuncture during which significant problems of supply and adequacy of natural gas have arisen, due to of Russia’s attitude.
The offshore unit, built at Singapore’s Keppel Shipyard, is about 300 meters long and was estimated to anchor under the name “Orfeas” in the fall of 2023, 17.6 km from the port of Alexandroupolis. and will be connected to the terminal by a 28 km long pipeline. This floating unit will receive liquefied natural gas from tankers and store it in its tanks. When gasified it will be introduced into the pipeline and will enter the supply system.
The Independent Gas System (ΑΣΦΑ) Alexandroupolis aims to create one fourth gateway for natural gas import in our country. The storage capacity of liquefied natural gas of the unit is expected to be 153,500 cubic meterswhile it is estimated that the maximum annual technical gasification capacity is 5.5 billion cubic meters.
The project will ensure new quantities of natural gas for the supply of the Greek and the regional market of SE Europe, at the same time contributing to expansion of gas sources and supply routesin the promotion of competition for the benefit of the final consumer, in the security of supply of Greece and the Balkan countries, in the improvement of the reliability and flexibility of the National Natural Gas System as well as the Regional and Trans-European Systems but also in the strengthening of the country’s environmental goals.
The commercial operation of ASFA Alexandroupolis is expected at the end of 2023.
