At 7 p.m. Mitsotaki announcements about reductions in electricity prices

by

Today at 19.00 the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakiswill make announcements on the issue of electricity prices.

Tomorrow Friday, at 8.30 at the General Secretariat for Information and Communication, the measures will be specified by the Minister of Finance Christos Staikouras, the Minister of Environment and Energy Costas Skrekas, the Deputy Minister of Finance Theodoros Skylakakis, the Secretary General of Fiscal Policy Thanos Petralias and the Secretary General of Energy Alexandra Sdoukou.

The presentation will be moderated by Deputy Government Spokeswoman Aristotle Peloni.

The formula of the government, according to information from skai.gr, will have 2 basic ingredients. The first will concern ceiling on the wholesale price and the second subsidies on retail. In the first phase the time horizon is for 6 months, from June, ie until the end of the year. However, the government’s plan will include some retroactivity which remains to be seen how it will be reflected in the announcements that will be made. If needed, the government is prepared to extend the intervention for at least the first half of 2023.

The funds that will be required amount to about 2.5 billion euros for the semester and will come from the Energy Transition Fund, the State Budget and the taxation of the super profits of energy companies.

The goal of the government is none other than return of accounts at the level of last summer, shortly before the frenetic increase in gas prices began. In August 2021 the price of natural gas had a fluctuation of 25 € -28 € / MwH. Today it is at 105 euros, almost four times as much.

The intervention will be horizontal, for everyone, ie the focus on small consumptions of 300Kw / month stops. In fact, the information says that it will also apply to secondary residences and cottages, in contrast to the current subsidy system that applies only to the first residence. Of course it will also concern businesses.

It is clear that in addition to relieving households and businesses, the government wants to put bridle and inflation who, running at double-digit percentages … gnaws on citizens’ incomes, largely nullifying government tax-reduction policies.
