The Greek positions in Greek-Turkish, but also the geostrategic role of Greece at a critical juncture, will be highlighted by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis during his meeting with US President Joe Biden, but also the close meetings with US officials, with his speech in Congress also having an important heavy. This is Mr. Mitsotakis’ second visit to Washington during his term.
In particular, on Monday, at 10.25 pm (Greek time), the Prime Minister meets at the White House with the President of the United States. There will be an initial four-on-four in front of the cameras, followed by private conversations between the two men, and then extended talks with the ministers accompanying the prime minister and their American counterparts.
Mr. Mitsotakis will extensively present to Mr. Biden the Turkish challenges, even presenting data on the number of Turkish overflights over the Greek islands, something that acquires special importance after Turkey’s stance on NATO on the accession of Finland and Sweden to the alliance. However, the government clarifies that this is not a trip that is characterized by an anti-Turkish agenda, as many issues will be discussed. Greece wants to become an energy hub due to its privileged geostrategic position, it has the support of the USA, and it remains to be seen how much greater this participation will be both with LNG loads and with the hydrocarbon surveys that will be done in Greece.
As far as the economy is concerned, they are seeking in the government even more American investment. American giants have already invested a lot of money in, and Athens wants this to continue. Bilateral cooperation will also be discussed, in the wake of the vote on Thursday of the Greek-American defense agreement, and finally the issue of Ukraine’s war with Greece highlighting the difference of attitude in relation to Turkey.
A reception will be held at the White House at midnight (5 pm US time). It is noted that this is the first reception after the pandemic, and it takes place on the occasion of the 201st anniversary of the Greek revolution, and with the Greek community present.
The next day, Tuesday, we will have the speech of Mr. Mitsotakis in the Congress, after the invitation of the Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi. The Prime Minister is preparing this speech for days, as he will address the US legislature, will raise all issues concerning our country, but also the role of Greece in general.
Mr Mitsotakis is expected to meet with members of the Senate, including the chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee. Robert Menendez.
