State Department intervention on Turkish overflights: We call for debate, not provocative action

by

The intervention of the State Department provoked a question from an American journalist about the Turkish overflights over the Greek islands. US State Department spokesman Ned Price spoke of provocative actions.

“We encourage all countries to respect the sovereign airspace of other countries and to use government aircraft taking due regard for the safety of navigation of civil aircraft “State Department spokesman Ned said in response to a reporter’s question about how much the United States is concerned about Turkish overflights over the Greek islands and how these actions affect NATO stability.

Mr Price said: “Where there is disagreement over the borders of a country’s airspace, we call for coordination and discussion, not provocative actions that could lead to in fatal accidents “.

“As a matter of principle, we encourage all states to resolve maritime delimitation issues peacefully and in accordance with international law,” he added.

With unimaginable threats and unbelievable claims The Turkish Foreign Minister reacted on Friday to the Greek step for the flight of Turkish fighters at a distance of 2.5 miles from Alexandroupolis.

As it transmits SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis from Istanbul, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesman Tanzu Bilgic said:

“Hellenic Air Force F-16 aircraft violated our airspace west of Gökçeada on 16 May 2022 and west of Enez on 17 May 2022. Our Air Force provided the necessary response to these provocative violations on 18 May 2022, in accordance with the rules of reciprocity and engagement. Greece is once again trying to shape the perception of the international public opinion against our country using the tension that started with its own provocative actions. In this context, we completely reject the baseless allegations and accusations made against our country by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs with its announcement of May 20 and we strongly condemn the Greek violations of our airspace. “In order for such incidents not to happen again, Greece must stop its provocative actions in the Aegean and seriously approach the process of Confidence Building Measures, both bilaterally and within NATO, which has been avoiding participating in its meetings for a year now.”

Recep Tayyip Erdogan escalates the tension, addressing – and – inside Turkey, in view of the elections to be held in the neighboring country. Lately, however, the Turkish provocation has reached the red lines and is being perceived and felt outside the Greek territory. The “veto” on the accession of Finland and Sweden, under the pretext that they support “terrorist groups”, is a prime opportunity for NATO members to realize the stalemate that Greece has been facing for decades.
