PSG announce Mbappé renewal after dispute with Real Madrid

by

After a soap opera with speculation about a transfer to Real Madrid, French star Kylian Mbappé, 23, renewed this Saturday (21) his contract with Paris Saint-Germain. The new agreement is valid for three years.

The announcement was made shortly before PSG’s match against Metz, in the last round of the French Championship. Last month, Mbappé’s side won their 10th national title with five games to spare and became the biggest winner of the competition alongside Saint-Étienne.

“I am very happy to continue this adventure and continue in France, in Paris, my city. I have always said that Paris is my home. I hope to continue doing what I love the most, which is playing football and winning trophies”, said the athlete on the lawn of the Parc des Princes stadium. He was accompanied by PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi from Qatar.

The Parisian club is preparing a party for Mbappé, who shares the role of the team with Messi, 34, and Neymar, 30. In the national championship, before the match against Metz, the Frenchman was the team leader in goals (25) and assists. (17).

In March, Messi and Neymar were even booed by fans after their defeat to Real Madrid and another failure in the Champions League, a tournament never won by PSG and considered the main objective of the club. Since then, the Parisian club’s management has come under even more pressure for a renewal of Mbappé.

According to the British BBC, PSG must pay €150 million (R$ 772 million) to keep the French star. If confirmed, the amount paid will be one of the highest in history – the most expensive transaction took place in 2017, when Neymar left Barcelona for PSG for €222 million (R$1.14 billion in current values).

This Saturday, the president of LaLiga, which manages the Spanish Championship, criticized the high value involved in the transaction and the president of the club, Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

“What PSG are doing by renewing Mbappé with large sums of money (namely where and how it will be paid) after recording losses of around €700m [R$ 3,6 bilhões] in recent seasons and have more than 600 million euros [R$ 3,1 bilhões] in wages is an INSULT to football. Al-Khelaifi is as dangerous as the Superliga,” Medrano wrote on social media.

Mbappé arrived at PSG in 2017. Since then, the Frenchman has accumulated four French titles (2017/18, 2018/19, 2019/20 and 2021/22), three Coupe de France (2017/18, 2019/20 and 2020/21), two French League Cups (2017/18 and 2019/20) and two French Supercups (2019 and 2020).

With the French national team, he won the 2018 World Cup in Russia and the UEFA Nations League (2020-2021).
