With 597 votes in favor, 36 against and 55 abstentions, members of the European Parliament voted against the closed leagues or competitions.
The European Parliament has supported the desire for Europe’s sports culture to be in line with European Union principles, such as solidarity, inclusiveness, sustainability, accessible events, sporting value and justice.
At the same time, it strongly opposes separatist events that degrade, endangering, the principles of the European Union and the stability of the European sports ecosystem.
The rapporteur of the issue was the Polish MEP and former international footballer, Tomas Frankowski, who, on the occasion of the creation of the European Super League and the risks it may pose, brought it to a vote in the Committee on Culture and Education, where it gathered positive 29 out of a total of 31 votes.
In the past two days, Frankowski’s proposal was put to a vote in the plenary session of the Parliament, which took a very clear position against the closed Leagues and the exclusions.
The decision was welcomed by UEFA in an announcement.
It is certainly a strong decision that is very likely to be a platform for decision-making on the open legal dispute between FIBA and ULEB with the Euroleague.
