Two-time champion Dustin Johnson retired from the PGA Tour and played in the LIV Golf Invitational Series.

The 37-year-old American denied his progress last week after announcing his participation in a Saudi-backed rebel tour at the Centurion Club in St Albans.

The first LIV Golf tournament will start on Thursday with a budget of approximately 20 million.

Rebel Kevin Nam revealed on Saturday that he had quit the PGA Tour ahead of the event in Hertfordshire, and Johnson, who has now earned $74 million in his career, is following him.

Johnson said: “Obviously it’s hard to know what the outcome will be at the moment, but I’m currently running a (PGA) membership tour.

“I’m going to play here now, but I can’t comment on the results on how he handles the tour.

“I don’t want to play for the rest of my life. It gives me a chance to do what I want to do.”

Johnson was excluded from the Ryder Cup selection for refusing to participate on the PGA Tour.

The 2020 Masters champion has already won twice in the United States, including last year’s Whistling Straits.

He added: “The Ryder Cup was amazing and it meant a lot to me, but in the end I decided it was the best thing for me and my family.

“Everything can change, and hopefully at some point. I have the opportunity to repeat it.”
