He tells MailPlus: The time was so long and so hard that I actually decided to go in 2017.

It’s been 25 years and it seemed like a good time, but it was good to decide to stay. I am very happy to be able to leave while still working, without regrets and on my own terms, it is the right time to leave and leave for others.

“My mother has always been interested in my television career and we talked every night. When something like this happens, she makes you reevaluate your life, it’s me. That’s another reason why I think the time is right.

Regarding Barker’s resignation, BBC Secretary Tim Davie said: “Sue Barker has been the face and voice of Wimbledon for thirty years. Many of our viewers don’t know the SW19 summer without her.

He is a perfect professional, an excellent presenter and an excellent colleague loved by current and former players, all of us at the BBC and an audience in the UK and abroad.

Her contributions to paving the way for women in tennis, the BBC, sports presentations and broadcasting cannot be overstated.

“We look forward to leading our coverage with all the style, warmth and knowledge he has shown over the last 30 years. Say goodbye to him at the end of the tournament.”
