Opinion – Juca Kfouri: Palmeiras may be on its way to the fourth Academy

by

The first academy dates back to the 1960s, followed by another in the 1970s and another one in the 1990s, although there are those who argue and say that real academies were only those of the 60’s and 70’s.

However brief the 1996 São Paulo champion team may have been, refusing to stamp it is unfair.

Know to the rare reader and the rare reader that the nickname was never necessarily linked to the number of titles won by the so-called teams, although they had won a lot of them.

The reference has always been to the quality played by so many stars that, if listed here, would require, at least, the entire page.

The question posed today if we are facing a new Academy, the fourth in alviverde history, the first in this century, is still more due to the cups raised, especially the second championship followed by Libertadores, than the quality.

Inevitable that after the 4-0 rout against Botafogo, with a performance in the first half that bordered on perfection and the golden clasp in the second with Wesley’s great goal, the question would come back to hammer: are we facing the fourth Academy?

It is difficult to answer, even if there is no doubt that Palmeiras is the only team that is playing football that is fun to see nowadays in the country. If he wins another Libertadores, or the Brazilian Championship, the seal will inevitably come.

Because in cold times of results evaluation, no one will ask where is a Djalma Santos, Valdemar Carabina, Djalma Dias, Julinho Botelho, Ademir da Guia, Luís Pereira, Cafu, Rivaldo, Djalminha, Luizão, Muller, where?

Perhaps only Weverton can be compared to Emerson Leão, and even so whoever does so will be accused of pushing the envelope.

It doesn’t matter. It matters that it’s been a pleasure to see Palmeiras and listen to Abel Ferreira’s post-match interviews.

Janio de Freitas, 90

The master of masters of Brazilian journalism completed his first nine decades of life on the 9th.

A deserved privilege for those who reach them with such lucidity and in full activity to the point that, every Sunday, in this Sheetilluminate the national facts with their wisdom.

In 1995, when I came to work at the newspaper, I heard from Mr Frias that he would be the Janio de Freitas of the sport of Sheet.

I thought about giving up, as it was an unattainable mission.

It continues to be, although it is a permanent objective as are the utopias that make us walk.

Long live Janio de Freitas!
