Sebastian Vettel expressed confidence that Formula 1 is ready to accept a gay driver in the championship in an interview with Attitude magazine, in which he raised general social issues.
“I have not experienced it, but I have heard people speak in a negative way about LGBT + people and this community. Each time I thought it was wrong, but today I have the confidence to speak up and shut them up. Homophobia is prejudice and prejudice is wrong. It is so simple”said -initially- the driver of the Aston Martin, and continued:
“It’s a similar situation to a sport like football. The image of a footballer or driver who is a hero must meet certain criteria. But the criteria are wrong. How do stereotypes relate to a person’s performance? Who decides this? It takes tremendous courage to show your true self instead of hiding behind a figure based on the wishes of other people.
Things are getting better, you see some engineers being more open. But there is much more we can do to improve diversity in motorsport, not just in terms of sexual orientation, but in general. Formula 1 started the “We Race as One” movement which is good, but we all have to work in such a way as to ensure that this will bring about a positive change. So we must act instead of just talking. I believe that Formula 1 would positively accept a gay driver as is right. “I believe that a gay driver will speed up the process of eliminating prejudices and will help push the sport in a different direction.”
