President Jair Bolsonaro said this Friday (26) he is rooting for Flamengo to win the final of the Copa Libertadores, which will be played this Saturday (27) against Palmeiras, in Montevideo, Uruguay.
Bolsonaro has already declared himself to be a Palmeirense, but he is often seen in stadiums wearing the shirt of other clubs, including the red-black carioca. On one of these occasions, in 2019, he watched a team game wearing the club’s shirt and alongside Sergio Moro, his then Minister of Justice.
The declaration of support for Flamengo for the continental decision was given at a military event in Rio de Janeiro.
“Just as I said in 2019 and it worked, tomorrow we are all Flamengo,” he said. The president had declared support for the Rio team two years ago, when Flamengo won the Libertadores title over River Plate (ARG), in Peru.
Jair Bolsonaro’s name is a tribute to an idol from Palmeira, Jair Rosa Pinto. Throughout his term, however, Flamengo’s current board, headed by president Rodolfo Landim, has had direct access to the president.
The so-called Mandante MP (provisional measure that gives the football game’s principal the exclusive right to broadcast it or negotiate the broadcast) was edited by Jair Bolsonaro on June 18, after meeting Landim.
The red-black board has denied political ties with the president and claims to act in the interest of the club.
