Lewis Hamilton has responded to racial abuse by former F1 world champion Nelson Piquet by posting a series of powerful messages online.
The seven-time world champion is the most successful driver in F1 history, but throughout his racing career he has suffered horrific racial slurs from big fans and top athletes.
Pickett used a Portuguese word that translates to English as a nasty racial slur “n-word” in an interview taped last November, which aired only on Brazilian television on Monday night.
At the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last year, he was discussing the incident between Hamilton and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. In this case, the pair was pushed into the corner of the pit and Verstappen crashed into the barrier at high speed.
Hamilton embarked on an infamous tidbit containing shameful racist language after Pickett, who had been dating Felstappen for several years, blamed her daughter Kelly for the incident.
Formula 1 and the Hamilton Mercedes team blamed Piqué’s comments.
“Discriminatory or racist language is not accepted in any way and is not engaged in by society,” F1 said in a statement published on Tuesday.

Lewis is a great ambassador for our sport and deserves respect. His tireless efforts to increase diversity and inclusion are a lesson to many and we are grooming him in F1.
Meanwhile, Mercedes supported the driver with his own statement.
We strongly condemn the use of racist or discriminatory language. “Lewis is at the forefront of our sporting efforts to combat racism and he is a true champion of diversity on and off the road,” the team said in a statement.
“We share together a diverse and comprehensive vision of motorsport. This incident underscores the critical importance of continuing to fight for a better future.”
Hamilton made a humorous and powerful statement on Twitter Tuesday afternoon.
The first tweet was a response to fans who wrote: “If Lewis Hamilton wrote ‘Who is Nelson Piquet?’ Twitter was shut down?”
Thirty-seven years later, the post “Focus on change of mind” in Portuguese followed before posting more responses in English.
“It is more than a language,” writes Hamilton. “This archaic way of thinking has to change and our sport is meaningless. I am surrounded by these attitudes and my whole life has a purpose. Time to study. It was time to act.”
The racist nature of Pique’s words shocked many F1 fans, but as former champions and racers often rebelled against Stevenage-born stars, an older white ex-driver, Hamilton, was not surprising. Regularly.
Hamilton has been campaigning more and more on diversity issues in recent years. He is a prominent supporter of the Black Lives Matter movement, and his Hamilton Commission was established to provide Black youth with more opportunities in STEM subjects.
The former McLaren drivers are also working with the Mercedes team to increase the diversity of the workforce, primarily white, male and straight, like any other F1 paddock.
Daniel Ricciardo says he became overconfident after winning his first F1.
