At Tuesday’s Tour de France Rally, there was a chaotic scene after a group of nine protesters blocked the route and forced the race to stop.

With about 35km to go on stage 10, a small start led by Alberto Bettiol came close to colliding with a group of weather activators positioned in the middle.

Protesters wearing T-shirts with the words “Only 989 days left to save our future” lit a red flame and Bettiol punched the group as he walked through the smoke.

The Tour de France guards initially struggled to get free, so it seemed their hands were tied to the road and chained around their necks.

Race director Christian Prudom was forced to stop the proceedings using the roadside before Bettiol could lap the waiting car.

When the protesters arrived, Peloton was also forced to stop, leaving a large number of cyclists behind for about 10 minutes when the group finally left.

French police have been widely criticized for cracking down on the Champions League final between Liverpool and Real Madrid and have used brute force tactics to break up activists. Some used pepper spray.

A group called Derniere Renovation claimed responsibility for the delay.

They explain it in a statement:

“We can no longer remain on the sidelines of an ongoing climate disaster.” We have 989 days left to save our future, our humanity.

“The finish line is a canyon and we call on the government to turn around immediately.”

“Our goal is to enforce the law to significantly reduce France’s emissions, starting with energy rehabilitation, the area that best combines social and climate justice today.

“This is the last chance to prevent catastrophic and irreversible consequences: deadly heat, extreme weather, famine, mass migration, armed conflict…and this is for people of all future generations.”

When the race resumed, Bettiol attempted an early start, but Magnus Cort won stage 10 with a beard in the swallowed and throbbing final sprint.
