Opinion – PVC: Palmeiras eliminated: marathon helps to understand the unpredictability of Brazilian football

by

Palmeiras were eliminated from the Copa do Brasil in their 47th game in a season that began on January 23. This was exactly the number of matches played by Bayern, in the sum of the Championship and German Cup, in addition to the Champions League 2021/22.

It is not possible to say that the elimination of the knockout has happened because of this race with obstacles, because Abel Ferreira’s team played well and could define the classification with the penalty missed by Raphael Veiga, in the 21st minute of the second half.

Or with Gabriel Veron, passing through Jandrei, still in the first stage. But the marathon explains the injury of Rony, the absence of Rafael Navarro and the possible loss of rhythm of Raphael Veiga, after six games away for muscular problem.

The obstacle course is not exclusive to Palmeiras. Atlético-MG and Flamengo have already reached 44 matches, São Paulo has 46 and everyone has ups and downs. Rogério Ceni sees his team tie Atlético at Mineirão and win on penalties at Allianz Parque and, at the same time, draw 0-0 with Juventude at Morumbi.

Flamengo revives with a tactical reform structured by Dorival Júnior, but with 27 points lost from the 48 played in the Brazilian.

All these fluctuations lead to the maintenance of the trademark of this Boleira nation: unpredictability. It is not possible to doubt Corinthians, from 42 matches in the season. The collection of 14 draws is in the way, but having five games less than the favorite is equivalent to a month on the European calendar at this point.

Perhaps it explains why Corinthians is treated like a cow on top of a tree, which no one knows how it climbed, but one is sure that it will fall from there. But it doesn’t fall and we are already in the 17th round of the Brasileirão and it is one of the rare five clubs alive in three competitions, along with Athletico-PR, Atlético-GO, São Paulo and Flamengo.

We will still be more surprised by this incredible football from Brazil.
