The World Athletics Federation Council has chosen Tokyo to host the 2025 World Championships.
The biggest “stars” of classical sports will return to the Olympic Stadium of the Japanese capital, the venue of last year’s Olympic Games, in the year that the country’s Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) will celebrate its 100 years!
In 2025, the Tokyo Olympic Stadium will have the opportunity to be filled with athletics fans, who did not have the opportunity to attend the last Olympic Games due to restrictions brought about by the coronavirus pandemic.
The other candidate cities to host the event were Nairobi, Silesia and Singapore, which were considered strong and experienced enough to host the tournament.
Tokyo garnered the highest score as it was judged to have the potential to stage a strong event, while in terms of revenue it was estimated that it would be able to bring more profits to the World Organisation.
The Japanese capital was also seen as a destination that could further boost the sport’s international profile, while also having the right climate.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe thanked all the cities for taking the time and effort to prepare the bids, showing their commitment to athletics.
He reinforced the board’s desire for everyone to continue discussing future opportunities to host World Championships.
“Amidst an extremely strong field of bids to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships, Tokyo made a compelling bid,” Coe said and continued:
“I hope this will be a shining light for Japan as they celebrate 100 years of the Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) in 2025, offering the city’s residents the opportunity to witness the ultimate celebration of classical sport.
JAAF President Mitsugi Ogata commented: “We are very proud that World Athletics has shown its confidence in Japan to host the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
Together with World Athletics as a team, we will use this opportunity to present the best possible event to develop our sport at a higher level.
History has shown that we have the ability and energy to host the world’s top athletes and inspire international audiences.
We promise that the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo will be full of fans to make it an unforgettable experience for the athletes and everyone involved.”
The 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships begins in Oregon on Friday (15/07), while Budapest in Hungary will host the 2023 event.
