Manchester United have refused to sign Frankie de John, despite the Barcelona midfielder saying he does not want to join the club.
After weeks of negotiations, the Red Devils finally signed a deal with Barca on Wednesday, agreeing to pay £63m up front and an additional £10m in add-ons and bonuses.
However, the deal remains a rocky one, with Spanish reports claiming that De John has no plans to switch the Catalan sun to Manchester.
On Thursday, Sports said De John’s agent, Ali Darson, was “wasting his time” when United general manager Richard Arnold and director of football John Marteau met.
The 25-year-old and his girlfriend happily settled in Barcelona and recently bought a house in the Pedralbes neighbourhood.
The article even claims that De John had even told his teammates that it would be “impossible” to leave Spotify without an offer of Champions League football, especially at Old Trafford.
But now the Sun is reporting that the United boss has dismissed rumors and speculation in the Spanish press and declared that De John is ready to join the Red Devils.
If his commitment to the transfer is questionable and revealed before final negotiations with Barca begin, the club will not proceed with the contract.
De John also met several times with Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag, the new United manager.
Instead United picked up on the issue of unpaid wages with Barcelona, ​​De John agreeing to take a temporary pay cut during the pandemic and understanding he would be paid at a later date.
Earlier reports showed De John’s debt at £17m, but Sun claims that figure is closer to £24m.
Barcelona want United to pay up, otherwise the sale of De John doesn’t do much to alleviate their financial fair play woes, but the Old Trafford boss has agreed to their request. I refuse.
