Michael van Gerwen was far from his best in winning Sunday night’s World Match of the Match against Adrian Lewis, but he is still convinced he can bounce back from a title injury.
The three-time world champion has been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome and is trying to recover after wrist surgery.
It was clear that surgery had taken him out during the collision with the jackpot, but despite an 89.66 average, he was able to get over the line with a 10-7 win.
Injuries and poor performance don’t significantly damage MVG’s self-confidence. He is still interested in his chances of winning the third title in a row and says that he can beat anyone else on the planet by 90%.
When asked about his expectations in Blackpool, MVG said: I’m still in the tournament and that’s fine, but he always wins.
Of course, some adjustments are needed, but Michael still has a 90% chance of defeating everyone. I always expect a lot from myself, but that’s probably my biggest danger. “
Van Gerwen isn’t the only one confident of his success at Blackpool this week. Reigning champion Peter Wright looks even more excited after winning his first round.
Snakebite has stated that he is the only one who can comfortably fire Maders Raz in the opening game and defeat him in Winter Gardens.
“My main challenge is me. Only I can be offended by winning this tournament”, said the World Champion.
“I don’t care who gets to the other side. I just become a loser.”
Wright and Van Gerwen’s chances seem to have been boosted by the fall of many celebrities early in the match.
Jonny Clayton was mad at Rowby-John Rodriguez in the first round, Gary Anderson was knocked out by Darry Gurney, and Inform’s Luke Humphries was defeated by Nathan Aspinall.
MVG will face Masters champion Joe Karen for the past 16 years, and Snakebite will face Christophra Taiski in the quarterfinals.
