Soto catches the eye after clinching Home Run Derby win

by

We are getting into the thick of this year’s Major League Baseball campaign as the tournament races towards a conclusion. There’s still plenty of baseball to be played this season, and nothing has been won or lost yet. Teams, coaches, players and fans understand this and are preparing for a gruelling few weeks as we prepare to approach what’s sure to be another grandstand finish. It’s an excellent time to be a follower of the sport and to place a bet on baseball.

Who will be the big winners and sore losers of the last remaining months of the season? Will the favourites do as expected and blaze a trail of glory all the way to the World Series and a place in the history books or will we see an upset. This world-famous sports tournament is renowned for throwing up shocking results and giant killings from the underdog. Will we see more of the same this fall? It certainly looks possible, and we have already enjoyed a few scorelines that raised eyebrows in the press room.

The World Series was originally delayed due to off-field problems in the MLB, but the wheels are in motion, and a date has been set. The World Series – the season-defining fixture – will crown a champion, but which clubs will be involved and play before the eyes of the watching world later this year? That remains to be seen, and at this stage of the campaign, a strong case could be made for three or more teams making it to the final.

Juan to keep an eye on

Baseball fans must remain patient before finding out which team is the main attraction this year, but one MLB award has already been won, with Juan Soto claiming the Home Run Derby. Soto had already been heavily linked with a move away from his current employers, the Washington Nationals, rejecting a contract offer and whipping the sport into a frenzy. The top teams are on high alert over Soto’s future as they aim to secure his signature in the next trade, tying down one of the game’s best and most famous names.

Juan has already won more than his fair share of admirers this season, but he stepped it up a notch when his great play was rewarded by winning the Home Run Derby against strong opposition. The 23-year-old scooped the prize on Monday, but the slugger didn’t do things the easy way. He beat off the attentions of Cleveland Guardians big-hitter Jose Ramirez by a score of 18 to 17 to set up a mouth-watering shoot-out with Albert Pujols, who had snuck through the previous match.

Soto was up second in all his match-ups, making life difficult, but the young star held his nerve and showcased his talents. Playing second meant Soto knew the score he was chasing down, and the Washington poster boy had no trouble passing those marks. Soto booked his place in the final with a nail-biting 16-15 win over Pujols to set up a meeting with another future star in Julio Rodriguez for the Seattle Mariners. The rookie caught the eye when making it to the last two of the Home Run Derby but seemed to run out of steam when it mattered most, with his skill and flair abandoning him. Julio notched just 18, and that score was surpassed with time to spare.

Soto considers his options

Having caught the attention of coaches working at the MLB’s biggest teams, Soto sent shockwaves through the division when rejecting the offer of a new contract that would have kept him at Washington for the next few seasons. The latest media reports tell us that the youngster rejected a 15-year deal worth $440m, which was a brave move.

Signing the deal would have given Juan financial security for the rest of his life, although that is perhaps already a foregone conclusion. Rejecting a contract at Washington suggests his heart is set on a move somewhere else, but where will we see Juan swinging? His medium to long-term future hangs in the balance, but one thing is for sure, he won’t be short of offers when the trade re-opens.
