Arsenal reportedly provided Bukayo Saka with a significant salary to avoid joining him at Manchester City.
The 20-year-old was one of Mikel Arteta’s standout players in the Premier League last season, scoring 11 goals and 7 assists.
Saka is already in the Citi spotlight, with MailOnline claiming the Premier League champions are eyeing England as a “dream alternative” to Raheem Sterling, who moved to Chelsea earlier this month.
The report claims that Arsenal have taken steps to prevent Citi from moving, offering Saka a new contract worth at least double the current £70,000 weekly contract.
Saka, who has two years remaining on his current contract, has yet to respond to Arsenal’s offer.
If he accepts, Saka will be one of Arsenal’s biggest winners, along with new summer signings Gabriel Magalhizas and Thomas Parte.
Arteta was asked how the negotiations with Saka were going on Friday and said: “Contract negotiations are always private and we can’t talk to the players.
“But it is clear that we are building a team for the future and these names are very important to us.”
Arsenal are also in talks to extend William Saliba’s contract.
The French defender has yet to break into the first team, but is currently with the Arteta team on a pre-season tour of the United States.
