After the fifth place in the final of the Oregon World Championship, the Katerina Stefanidis believes he will be in better shape in August for the European Championships. “I set a season record in the top race of the year. You always go into a big race and you want to do your best. That’s what I tried to do in Oregon, and to some extent I succeeded. The performance just wasn’t enough to put me on the podium” declared his pole vault champion and continued: “For some strange reason the good conditions, i.e. the favorable wind, do not help me. I knew from the warm-up that the other gymnasts would go high, because they would have an advantage over the underdog. If the conditions were similar to the qualifying, then I think it would be possible to reach the medal. What mainly happens to me is that I have lost touch with the jumps at 4.80 and 4.85 meters. Nevertheless, my first jump at 4.85m. it was pretty good. This is something I will have the opportunity to work on from now on in training as well».
Regarding the European Championships in Munich, where Stefanidis will go to defend the title she has from the two previous competitions, she emphasized:Anyway, I’m expected to be in better shape in August, the time when the competitive peak comes. In the European I want to be on the podium, while the Diamond League final is also on my mind».
The Greek champion made a special reference to the excellent atmosphere of the national team at the World Championship in Oregon: “The conditions in the University hostels had minor issues, in relation to the air conditioning, but also the noise. However, I can say that it did a lot of good in bonding our team. The team had a lot of new guys, still we were all a group and we really did a lot of things together. I thoroughly enjoyed what I experienced as a member of our national team in Oregon. Excellent atmosphere among the children and in relation to the leaders and coaches. I believe that our team has young children who can make good appearances in the future and stand out».
Stefanidis will come to Europe for the Monaco Diamond League on August 10, and then she will participate in the European Championships in Munich.
