Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay and Chile launch joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup

by

Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay launched this Tuesday (2) their joint bid to host the 2030 World Cup, the first shared between four countries.

The authorities of these countries made the bid official at the Estadio Centenario, in Montevideo, where Uruguay defeated Argentina 4-2 in the final of the 1930 World Cup and became the first world champion.

The presidents of each candidate federation, together with the president of CONMEBOL, Alejandro Domínguez, as well as the respective ministers of Sports, will show the seal of a “World Centenary”.

The desire to bring the Cup back to South America has been around for a long time and began to be designed between Uruguay and Argentina. In 2017, before a game between the selections for the Qualifiers, Luis Suárez and Lionel Messi posed together with numbers on their shirts that formed 2030, kicking off a campaign that later added Chile and Paraguay.

This year, in mid-June, after chairing a meeting between representatives of the four countries in Asunción to form a working table, the vice president of Paraguay, Hugo Velázquez, indicated that the objective is “to resort to history and, above all, to to what football represents for this part of the continent”.

Domínguez also emphasized the same point. “On completing 100 years, the World Cup must return to its original home, South America”, then tweeted the president of CONMEBOL.

Spain and Portugal, together, are for now the only rival candidate, after nominating themselves in June 2021. Morocco, which at first was going to join the Iberian countries, can apply alone, but has not yet officially done so.

Similarly, the UK and Ireland dropped the idea of another joint bid for the 2030 World Cup in February and turned their attention to Euro 2028.

In October 2021, the Israeli government reported that FIFA president Gianni Infantino had launched the idea that the country could organize the 2030 World Cup with other countries in the region led by the United Arab Emirates.

Until now, most World Cups have taken place in Europe. Before the 2014 World Cup, in Brazil, the last edition in South America had been in 1978, in Argentina.

The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, the first time with three countries together.
