Flamengo opens advantage against Corinthians and is close to the Libertadores semi

by

Flamengo overturned this Tuesday (2) an unbeaten run by Corinthians at Neo Química Arena that had already lasted 21 games. With a victory by 2 to 0, the team from Rio de Janeiro opened an advantage in the confrontation valid for the quarterfinals of Libertadores.

In the return duel, next Tuesday (9), at Maracanã, the team from Rio will have the advantage of being able to lose even by a goal difference, which will still advance to the semifinals of the competition. It is worth remembering that the red-black team is undefeated in the tournament, now, with eight wins and a draw.

Vitor Pereira’s team needs a victory by at least two goals difference to take the fight for the spot to penalties.

The triumph against Corinthians was built with goals from Arrascaeta, in the 37th minute of the first half, and Gabigol, in the 6th of the second. The move in which the Uruguayan scored the net was the target of much criticism from Corinthians, as the ball hit the arm of Flemish midfielder João Gomes. Argentine referee Patricio Loustau, however, considered the bid legal.

Corinthians had not lost a match at home since February 2, when they were overcome by Santos, in a duel for the Campeonato Paulista, by 2-1. After that, there were 21 games, 15 wins and six draws.

Among those present who saw the loss of Corinthians’ unbeaten record was the coach of the Brazilian team, Tite, who watched the game from one of the boxes in the arena.

Before the return match, the alvinegro team and the carioca team will have commitments for the Brazilian Championship. On Saturday (6), Corinthians face Avaí, at 7 pm, while Flamengo duels on the same day with São Paulo, at 8:30 pm, at Morumbi.
