Chelsea have started talks to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona.
The 33-year-old joined Barca for free in February after Arsenal agreed to terminate his contract.
But while the arrival of Robert Lewandowski this summer threatens the amount of playing time Aubameyang will receive at Camp Nou, Barcelona are also hiring some high earners to balance their finances.
Chelsea have bolstered Thomas Tuchel’s attacking options with the signing of Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer, but the club are looking for a new striker following Romelu Lukaku’s return to Inter.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea have approached Aubameyang about a possible move to Stamford Bridge this summer.
Tuchel is already working with Aubameyang at Dortmund and the two have developed a positive relationship after spending time together in the Bundesliga.
Chelsea also moved to sign Aubameyang during Frank Lampard’s government in January 2020, but was held back by the striker’s salary demands.
During his time at Arsenal, Aubameyang scored 92 goals in 163 appearances, helping the club win the FA Cup in 2020.
However, his final months with the Gunners were tumultuous as Mikel Arteta was stripped of his captaincy due to a build-up of discipline issues.
Aubameyang was then forced to leave Arsenal in the January transfer market, allowing him to join Barca in the final week.
Aubameyang, who has scored 13 goals in 23 games since arriving at Camp Nou, described the 33-year-old as a godsend in March.
Asked about Lewandowski’s arrival last month, Aubameyang said: “I know him very well, so I was excited. We played together in Dortmund and had a good time there.”
“I was just happy and when it became official we got back together and had some funny words about the past, but I’m very happy because this is how Barcelona compete with great strikers and that’s what this club is all about.”
