Santos wins Athletico in Curitiba and breathes in the fight against relegation

Santos achieved an important victory in the Brazilian Championship, which at least for now allows them to move away from the relegation zone and even aim for the first half of the table.

This Saturday (30), the team from Alvinegra beat Athletico-PR by 1-0 away from home and went to 35 points. Madson scored in his head. Afterwards, goalkeeper João Paulo held the pressure of the people from Paraná.

The victory, the second in a row at Nacional, gains even more weight considering the Santos campaign away from his stadium.

So far at the Brazilian Nationals, this was only the second victory for Santos away from home in 15 matches played (before, they beat Chapecoense) — they have 7 defeats and 6 draws.

Momentarily, Fábio Carille’s team rises from 16th position to 11th position. But most of the clubs he overcame have not yet entered the field in this round.

At the beginning of the current edition of the Brazilian Nationals, Santos reached sixth place, but has been at the bottom of the table since the 17th round, when it began to fall precipitously.

During this period, he even changed coach: Fernando Diniz was fired and replaced by Carille.

With him at the edge of the field, there are three victories so far (in addition to this one, against Grêmio and Fluminense), four draws and three defeats. Five goals scored and nine conceded, a high number for a coach who arrived accredited for building solid defensive teams.

Athletico, on the other hand, with the defeat, loses the chance to finish the round in 10th place.

The team shares the spotlight with two important finals: the Copa Sudamericana, on the 20th, against Red Bull Bragantino, and the Copa do Brasil, on December 12th and 15th, against Atlético-MG.

Athletico’s next match will be again in Curitiba, against Flamengo, at 16:00 on Tuesday (2), in a late game of the fourth round. Afterwards, they will face Bragantino at Nacional at 16:00 on Sunday (7), in Bragança (SP).

Santos, also at 16:00 on Sunday, will face the derby against Palmeiras, in Vila Belmiro.
