Jürgen Klopp thinks Liverpool should have won at Old Trafford on Monday night.

Both teams entered the match in poor form as United lost their first two games of the season and the Reds drew both.

However, it was the Red Devils who greatly improved their performance and achieved a deserved victory thanks to goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford.

The hosts were much more impressive, but Klopp believes his team could have picked up all three points if they had simply shown more confidence in their game.

“We are in a difficult situation with injuries. That’s right,” he told Sky Sports. “We go on Sunday with 14-15 senior players. We must try not to do it, because there is no real option left.”

“Even in our situation, if we had played a little better, if we had had a little more confidence in what we were doing, we would have won this game. But the way I see it, we lost, so here we go.”

A look at the stats suggests that Klopp is having an argument. The visitors finished with 70% possession and had more shots and shots on target than the hosts.

But the numbers didn’t really represent the atmosphere of the match, with Manchester United better off for most of the game, except when Liverpool were booked in the final 15 minutes when Mohamed Salah scored a consolation goal.

Klopp added to the BBC that he hopes the Reds will play better on Saturday when they host Bournemouth: “I don’t have many arguments. We lost the game. Another day.” Yes, you can change that if you have more confidence in what you do.

“We want to fight to play the football that we can play. We have a good game at home on Saturday and Anfield should vibrate. We need to set the fire and the rhythm.”

“We will absolutely try everything every Liverpool fan expects. We will fight for our lives.”
