Serena Williams is expected to completely cut off her tennis racket after losing the US Open, and some of the most famous players in the history of the sport are paying tribute to her legendary career.
The 40-year-old has not ruled out a return to the pitch, but her loss to Australia’s Ajla Tomlianovic in New York will be her last.
The American has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and a further 14 doubles titles with her sister Venus.
Not surprisingly, one of the most iconic athletes in history has received countless tributes and emotional messages from legends.

He changed the sport and introduced tennis to people who had never heard of it. I think it’s a product of what he did. Without Serena, Venus and her family, I wouldn’t be here. I’m really grateful to you.
Andy Murray said: “Her achievements in the sport are clearly incredible. She will be remembered as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Not the greatest female player.”
Finally, Rafael Nadal said: From a tennis point of view, his departure is a great loss, but on the other hand, he deserves everything he has achieved.
