Daniel Ricciardo says he knew nothing about Oscar Piastre joining McLaren after it was revealed the team had signed the driver earlier than previously thought.

On Friday it was confirmed that Piastre would compete with McLaren from 2023 to replace Ricciardo, who announced his departure last week after agreeing to the early termination of his contract.

After McLaren and Alpine announced the signing of the 21-year-old Piastre, Piastre’s future became one of the worst transfer stories in F1 history.

The case went to the Contract Approval Board, and although the board’s ruling contained some very interesting details, it ruled in favor of the Woking-based team.

CRB said the deal between the Formula 2 champions and McLaren was signed on July 4, but Ricciardo took to social media on July 13 after rumors he could leave the team due to poor performance. Inside him, he posted that he would stay on the team.

“I’m not going to play sports until the end of next year, staying with McLaren,” the 33-year-old said.

It hasn’t always been easy, but not everyone has it easy. Work with your team to improve the car and return it to where it belongs. “

He seemed to confirm what many suspected McLaren had hidden behind Ricciardo and replaced fellow Australian Piastre.

“As far as dates, this is the first time I’ve heard of it. I don’t know the time frame,” he told Sky Sports after Friday free practice ahead of this weekend’s Dutch Grand Prix.

“A few months before that day [July 13th]Together with the team, we discuss where we could improve to build a better future.

“I knew that negotiations were underway.

“If so, that’s it, it’s not my decision.”

Ricciardo is currently out of racing next season but has been linked with a vacant seat at Alpine which the French team has announced will be filled by Piastre prematurely.

But that prospect is looking increasingly unlikely as Alpine is reportedly set to transfer AlphaTauri star Pierre Gasly.
