For the second time, apart from a shocking contingency, today at 21:17 Greek time, NASA will attempt to launch the ground-breaking “Artemis 1” rocket in the history of space to the Moon.
Mission managers at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida canceled last Monday’s launch after a sensor indicated that one of the four RS-25 engines in the Mega Space Launch System (SLS) rocket’s core stage was not cooling properly.
As reported by the “Guardian” newspaper, the US space agency identified and fixed the engine problem that caused the initial launch attempt to be postponed.
For today’s planned launch, NASA has set a two-hour launch window.
SLS, the most powerful rocket ever built at 98 meters, will launch the Orion capsule on a 38-day mission 64,000 km past the moon and back, ending with a dive into the Pacific Ocean on October 11. If all goes according to plan, it will be a historic moment for NASA as it returns to the Moon 50 years after the last Apollo mission.
NASA plans to launch the manned Artemis 2 mission around the moon in 2024 and in 2025 the Artemis 3 mission to land on the moon, carrying the first female astronaut to the moon.
