Elusive Verstappen, but … Saint pole position!

by

Max Verstappen put on a show of strength, but it was Carlos Sainz who smiled! The Dutch pilot was the fastest of all and indeed by at least 6 tenths of a second, however the Spanish Ferrari pilot finished second and automatically due to the World Champion’s penalty, he takes pole position!

It is the second time in his career that Saint has started first, with Verstappen starting 15th due to changes to his car, with Perez second and Alonso third, as Leclerc has also been penalized for the same reason as the Dutchman.

The qualifying standings, but not the starting order:

Vettel, Latifi, Magnussen, Tsunoda and Bottas all dropped out in Q1. And if the first four do not make a special impression, based on their performances this year, the same is not the case with Bottas after he had seven years and 148 Grands Prix to be out of continuity in testing so early.

One of the same in Q2, with Gasli, Ricciardo, Stroll, Schumacher and Zou finishing in… 10-15, while a mini surprise was the participation of Albon for the first time in his career in Q3.

There, Red Bull Racing showed its mettle, with Verstappen coming out and making a… joke early on, leaving his pursuers chasing him but also seeing that they couldn’t catch him. However, halfway through qualifying the Dutchman retired to the pits, seeing no point in testing again due to his suspension, with Leclerc, who will start far back in the Grand Prix for the same reason, slip stream to Saint and help him secure the second place which automatically… meant the first in Spa!
