Italy, world champion after 24 years, dethroned Poland in its “home”.

by

Italy were crowned world champions for the first time in 24 years, defeating Poland 3-1 in an improbable final (25-22, 21-25, 18-25, 20-25).

The holder of the last two titles and host of the event took the first set, but – despite the strong support of her crowd – was forced to surrender the scepters to the sweeping Italians, who lifted the cup with an upset.

In the first set, Italy maintained the upper hand for the longest time, reaching +4 in the last points (17-21). The Poles responded with a blistering 8-1 run to take the 1-0 set 25-22.

Italy responded in a similar way in the second set. Poland led 20-19, but the Italians went on a 7-1 run of their own to tie the set at 25-21.

From there, the Italian team completely dominated and took the next two sets 25-18 and 25-20.

The bronze medal was won by Brazil, winning 3-1 sets (25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-18) over Slovenia.
