To uphold the example of adherence to the constitutional imperatives of British governance, King Charles III pledged in a historic morning speech to members of both houses of the British Parliament.
Shortly before departing for Edinburgh where he will accompany Queen Elizabeth’s body to St Giles Cathedral this afternoon so Scots can pay their respects, Charles praised his mother’s “example of selfless duty”.
Earlier he had heard the “modest addresses” of the Speakers of the House of Commons and the House of Lords, in which they conveyed the condolences of the MPs and Lords.
The joint presence of members of both Houses is rare in the United Kingdom. During her 70-year reign, Elizabeth addressed both houses of parliament at the same time just five times.
The grand ceremony was held at the historic Westminster Hall, where Queen Elizabeth’s body, which will be airlifted to London on Tuesday evening, will be on public display from Wednesday evening.
Westminster Hall was built in 1097 by William the Conqueror’s son and has been used for important ceremonies ever since. Among others, William Wallace’s (‘Braveheart’j, Guy Fawkes and Charles I’s) were made there.
