In a game won by Palmeiras 3-1 this Sunday (31), Grêmio fans invaded the field after the final whistle and destroyed the VAR’s cabin. She left the lawn only after the arrival of the Rio Grande do Sul Military Brigade.
With the help of the video referee, Savio Pereira Sampaio annulled what would have been the Grêmio equalizer by 2-2 in the final minutes. Shortly after, Palmeiras scored the third.
After the game ended, Grêmio and Palmeiras fans exchanged punches on the side of the grid that separated the local and visiting public. Because of the barrier, no more serious fight took place.
The gremista revolt happened because the team is threatened by relegation in the Brazilian Championship. With this Sunday’s defeat, it occupies the penultimate position and is seven points behind Bahia, 16th place and the first team to get rid of the fall to Serie B. Grêmio still has 11 games in the competition.
The police have not disclosed so far if any fans have been arrested. They passed the field through a small door that separates the lower chairs from the lawn.
According to the STJD (Superior Court of Sports Justice), it will be necessary to analyze the images and the referee’s report to decide if there is any punishment to Grêmio and what it would be.
With the result, Palmeiras reached 52 points and jumped to second place in the table. The team reduced to seven points the difference in relation to the leader Atlético-MG, who has a game in hand and was defeated by Flamengo this Saturday (30).
Raphael Veiga, author of two goals from Palmeira, was the highlight of the game. The match was also special for Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira, who completed one year in the Palmeiras team this Saturday. The coach, with a contract until the end of 2022, has in his curriculum the titles of the Libertadores and Copa do Brasil. He also got the vices of the Supercopa, Recopa Sul-Americana and Campeonato Paulista.
The Grêmio fans’ frustration increased because the team was rehearsing a reaction at the Brazilian Nationals. In the previous round, they had beaten Juventude and came out ahead against Palmeiras thanks to a goal by Diego Souza.
But before the first half ended, Raphael Veiga scored twice to put the São Paulo team ahead.
Throughout the second half, the audience at the Arena do Grêmio encouraged the team and seemed to be rewarded at the end with Elias’ goal. But this was invalidated by impediment, causing part of the fans to revolt. Before the final whistle, Breno Lopes scored the third of the visitors.
Palmeiras returns to the field for the competition against Santos, on Sunday (7), in Vila Belmiro. Grêmio, on the other hand, faces Atlético-MG, in the fourth (3), in a delayed match of the 19th round.
