by

This week, Montenegro became the new stop in Malamatenia Papadimitriou’s participation in this year’s World Table Tennis Youth Contender.

The current champion of Greece in the youth singles initially competed from October 2 to 4 in the Youth Contender of Podgorica and the category of athletes up to 19 years old. He qualified for the main board and then placed 17-32. Soon after, she began her attempt at the Youth Star Contender in the same city, the WTT’s top tier tournament. He fought his way to the 1st round of the juniors there as well and was eventually eliminated in a three-way tie. In the meantime, as can be seen from the declarations of participation in the world federation (ITTF), within the next month the Greek colors are expected to have a numerical strong presence in tournaments of the Contender category of different levels, The main news is that Panagiotis Gionis, who is in the last part of his recovery from his Achilles problem, he has announced that he will compete in the WTT Contender in Slovenia, which will be held in Novo Gorica from October 31st to November 6th. Giannis Sgouropoulos, Giorgos Stamatouros and Giorgos Konstantinopoulos are still in the declarations for the same tournament. At the end of October and at the beginning of November, two WTT Youth Contenders will take place consecutively and a total of 6 children from 4 different clubs will take part there.

In the first phase of the open at the Voco Complex in Mavrovouni, Papadimitriou was in the 9th group. In the premiere, she defeated Azna Zlorg from Bosnia/Herzegovina in 3-0 sets (11-7, 11-6, 11-6) and then fought back 3-2 from top seed Chei Yun-en from Taipei (6-11, 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 1-11). In the decisive 3rd match, she defeated Suzana Milosevic from Montenegro with a 3-0 set (11-4, 11-1, 11-3) and passed as 2nd on the board of “32”. There she faced Angelika Romanovskaya of Kazakhstan, who had also taken 2nd place in the 6th group. The left-handed champion lost 3-0 sets, but much harder than the final score might indicate (8-11, 12-14, 13-15).

Today 05/10, in the same place, the current champion of Greece in the youth singles began her attempt at the Youth Star Contender of Montenegro. He was in the 2nd group of Under 19 and lost the qualification in a draw. Initially, she was easily defeated in 3-0 sets by Park Gaheon from Korea, the 2nd favorite of the tournament (2-11, 4-11, 3-11). In her next match she won unopposed 3-1 sets against Nora Dohotski (3-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-6). Earlier, the Hungarian had made a surprise by beating Park, and thus a three-way tie emerged. The Asian was the only one with a positive coefficient from the matches between the three athletes and she qualified with the 1st place in the group. She was followed by Dohotski because her 4-5 in sets is better than the 3-4 of the Greek international.

On the opening day of the powerful tournament, Papadimitriou also competed in the junior doubles. She teamed up with the Egyptian Farida Badawai, with whom they had medals from international tournaments a few years ago. In the 1st round they had a bye and in the semi-finals they lost 3-1 sets to the French Lucy Mobarek/Clea de Stoppeler (11-1, 10-12, 9-11, 3-11). Our champion has also competed in the Under 19 mixed doubles. Her partner is Remy Chambet Weil from the Netherlands.

The Men’s and Women’s Contenders will continue in Slovenia. Gionis is in better condition with his leg and if there is no unforeseen event, he will make his first international appearance there after a long time. The top Greek ace has been back in training for a month now, the qualifiers of the European championship in SEF, on 15-16/10, he will not be able to catch up, but he is giving everything to return to the international competitions at the end of the month. The WTT Contender Novo Gorica in Slovenia is another strong test for all athletes. Top names will appear directly on the main board and those who enter the qualifying process (along with the Greeks) will have a very difficult task to qualify. Sgouropoulos, Stamatouros and G. Konstantinopoulos have participated in respective tournaments in the last months and they certainly need more international games to check their competitive readiness.

The other two tournaments, which take place in the same period, are also World Table Tennis, they just concern the young ages. First of all, in the WTT Youth Contender in Italy, perhaps the largest Greek participation in an open of the (still small) institution is recorded.

In the Contender, which will be hosted in Liniano from October 30th to November 5th, 18-year-old Malamatenia Papadimitriou, who will start from 30/10-01/11, and also 14-year-old Yannis Koutras, 13-year-old Kostas Fakaros and the 12-year-olds Yiannis Kioseloglou and Konstantinos Alexoudis, who are to enter the tables on the three days 03-05/11.

The most experienced of these events, Papadimitriou, who is an Olympiakos athlete in Greece, will participate in the Under 19 age category. Koutras, Fakaros and Kioseloglou, who are Poseidon Loutraki athletes, already have one experience in a Contender tournament. The first will test his strength in the Under 15 and Under 17 categories and the other two in Under 13 and Under 15. The athlete of Filia Orestiada, Alexoudis, who participated in the Euro Mini Champs in France in the summer, will experience new performances playing as well in the Under 13 and Under 15 categories.

Immediately after Italy comes the corresponding Hungarian Open, which will be held in Sobatelli between November 3 and 9. The girls will start there as well and from the Greek side, Despina Amba of ASEA Sarises Florina has declared her participation. The 16-year-old champion will check her form in the three days 03 to 05/11 competing in the Under 17 and Under 19 categories.
