Santos and São Paulo wanted Libertadores, but stayed with the Sudamericana

by

Santos and São Paulo had chances of getting a spot in the next Libertadores. They needed combinations of results but, above all, to win their games. This did not happened.

At Vila Belmiro, Santos drew 1-1 with Cuiabá and avoided defeat only in the second half, thanks to a shot by Marinho that was left for Lucas Braga to complete for the goal. Defender Marllon had opened the scoring for the visitors in the opening stage.

During much of the match, Santos had more possession of the ball, but suffered from the same problem already seen in other games at the Brazilian: lack of creativity and offensive power. Without the opponent offering the counterattack, the team led by Fabio Carille simply did not know what to do.

When he needed it most, luck smiled on him with the ball left for Lucas Braga in the area.

Cuiabá had to overcome the absence of forward Clayson. Accused of assaulting a woman in the capital of Mato Grosso, he had his contract terminated and was removed from the concentration.

With the tie, Santos managed to finish the tournament in 10th place, with 50 points and qualified for the next Copa Sudamericana.

Ademir takes down São Paulo in Belo Horizonte

During the break of the match at Arena Independência, São Paulo realized that the combination they needed to go to Libertadores was happening. With the partial draw 0-0 with América-MG, it was enough to score a goal and win to qualify.

But who rocked the net in the second half was America. Ademir made the São Paulo defense a hell of a lot, scored twice and the home team won 2-0.

Eighth place and 53 points will take the miners for the first time in their history to the most important continental tournament.

São Paulo created little, but managed to maintain a certain balance in the first 45 minutes. But when the rival came forward and forced the game against the defense of Rogério Ceni’s team, he came to victory.

With the negative result, São Paulo finished the Brazilian in 13th place, with 48 points, and was also guaranteed in the Sudamericana.

Corinthians loses in Caxias do Sul and Juventude is saved

With no pretensions in the tournament, Corinthians had a sleepy performance against Juventude, in Caxias. Lucky for the home team, which fought and managed to win the match 1-0, with a penalty kick, converted by Chico Kim, 38 minutes into the second half.

With the victory, the home team escaped relegation to Serie B, finishing 16th. The team alvinegro, which secured in advance a place in the group stage of the Libertadores, finished fifth.

The result at Alfredo Jaconi also caused Grêmio’s fall to Série B. To avoid relegation, the Porto Alegre team needed to beat Atlético-MG, as they did, and root for defeats by Bahia and Juventude — at Castelão, the Bahians lost of Fortaleza, by 2-1, of turn.

Palmeiras says goodbye to the Brazilian with victory

At Arena Barueri, Palmeiras also fulfilled the schedule this Thursday. With the third position assured, the team alviverde faced Ceará and won by 1-0, goal by Kevin. The team from Ceará still dreamed of a place for the Libertadores dispute, but qualified for the Copa Sudamericana, in 11th.

The alviverde team returned to work with a team made up mostly of boys after giving vacations to the main players in the squad after winning the Copa Libertadores.

Since winning the continental competition, Palmeiras has played in three games full of boys and has achieved two victories (Cuiabá and Ceará) and a draw (Athletico).
