‘Root’ skate tournament returns to Florianópolis after 6 years and wins women’s category

In the six-year hiatus of Red Bull Skate Generation, the sport became Olympic, won new championships and debuted at the Tokyo Games. The event returns to Florianópolis this Saturday (11) to say goodbye to the 2021 season, in addition to celebrating its origins and its “root” character amid the changes experienced by the scene since 2015.

Generation was born in 2010, on the bowl (track that resembles a swimming pool) built by Pedro Barros’ family in the backyard of their home in the capital of Santa Catarina.

The host, then 15 years old and already a phenomenon on the slopes, started to receive sports legends and athletes from different generations for a world competition in a family atmosphere. A repeated tradition was created in 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

The five editions expanded the projection of the Rio Tavares neighborhood, which is located in the south of the island, as a barn and refuge for skateboarders who are fans of the bowls. The park, one of the two Olympic disciplines, is played on a similarly shaped track.

The presence of historic names, including Sandro Dias, Steve Caballero and Omar Hassan, helped consolidate the tournament as one of the hottest on the national calendar. Olympic champion, Australian Keegan Palmer participated in the 2014 edition, aged 11 years.

In 2021, Generation returns to its place of origin, the home of a renowned skateboarder who is now also an Olympic medalist: Pedro Barros, 26, won silver at the park in Tokyo.

The competition will be disputed by eight teams, and each of them will feature five skaters from three categories: “Under 21” (under 21), “The 90’s” (between 22 and 30 years old) and “OG’s” (over 30 years old ). For the first time, there will be a division between men and women at “Under 21” and “The 90’s”, which will guarantee an expressive and unprecedented female presence at the event.

Yndiara Asp, 24, from Santa Catarina, who played in the Tokyo 2020 Games, met Generation in 2012, when she saw American Lizzie Armanto in action in her neighborhood. “I was the only woman among the guys,” he recalls.

At that time, Yndi started his trajectory on wheels. “That really moved me and made me fall in love with this world. Generation is the essence of skateboarding because it brings together several generations. . Everyone sharing the session and cheering for each other,” he says.

Three years later, when she was already playing in tournaments, the girl from Santa Catarina also wanted to participate in the event, but at the time there was no female category. She joined three friends from the local scene, Isadora Pacheco, Emily Antunes and Leticia Gonçalves, and organized a demonstration with requests for the inclusion of women.

“I remember exactly how it was. We were at Isadora Pacheco’s house and decided to make some posters. We wanted to write not only in Portuguese, because there were gringos there too, but we weren’t even sure how to write in English. of a woman who was at the event entered the ‘vibe’ and gave us strength”, says Yndi, now one of Generation’s ambassadors.

The four friends will be reunited again in this year’s edition, but this time without posters and inside the track. They will be able to celebrate the conquest of space and the increase in the representation of female skateboarding in Brazil, especially after the Olympics.

“There are a lot of girls of all ages starting and falling in love with skateboarding. A lot of people who wanted to skate when they were younger say that at their time there were only boys and now they are starting to skate because of us. It’s been one thing. very beautiful to see, a revolution for women’s sports and skateboarding,” she says.

In addition to Yndi and Isadora, Dora Varella, who also played in the women’s park tournament at the Tokyo Games, will participate in Generation. The three Olympic representatives of Brazil park men, Pedro Barros, Luizinho Francisco and Pedro Quintas, are confirmed.

The event will also feature several young sports phenomenons. Among them are Gui Khury, 12, from Paraná, the first skater to hit a 1,080° maneuver (three complete turns) in a vertical competition, and American Minna Stess, 15.

André Mariano, 18, Luizinho’s brother and who has just won the STU Open in Rio de Janeiro, is increasingly part of the park’s elite and will compete again alongside his brother, fourth in Japan.

During the STU, last weekend, Pedro Barros was scared when he fell and hit his head. He had to withdraw from the competition —he still finished in second place— and was referred to a hospital, but he is already well and confirmed to participate in the event in his backyard.

The 2021 edition of Generation will be restricted to guests and will be broadcast live on Red Bull TV from 10:00 am this Saturday.
