Corinthians looks for a center forward and talks with Cavani, but has other targets

Corinthians has faced the conversations about the Uruguayan Edinson Cavani with restrictions. The club knows that hiring the 34-year-old striker is difficult, but has been in regular contact with the athlete’s brother and representative, Walter Gugliemone.

The interest of the Alvinegro team in Cavani was disclosed by journalist Samir Carvalho’s YouTube channel.

This Tuesday (14), Corinthians football director Roberto de Andrade said that the team’s priority for 2022 is the search for a 9 shirt, but he was cautious when talking about the Uruguayan.

“We had no contact with Cavani, much less with Suárez. But we cannot underestimate Corinthians. When the conversation came out about Willian, everyone said it was impossible because of what he was earning in Europe, and it worked,” said the topper.

It is not the first time that the Corinthians have become interested in the center forward. In previous years, when Cavani signaled the possible departure of Paris Saint-Germain (FRA), his brother had already received consultations, but nothing happened due to the economic unfeasibility of the transaction and the aim of the scorer to continue in Europe.

Corinthians knows that hiring Cavani is economically unfeasible. He fits the description of former president Andrés Sanchez who, in closing a deal with Ronaldo at the end of 2008, said that the club had not chosen the striker, but the striker had chosen the club.

At Manchester United (ING), Cavani receives around R$7.6 million per month. He has a contract until the end of the European season in June.

“The most that can happen is that we discover that we don’t have the conditions. We are not going to create misleading expectations for the fans, because this may not progress at all,” explained Andrade.

The Brazilian board is aware that Gugliemone may be doing the same with other clubs in South America, with the approval of Cavani himself, in search of an auction and appreciation.

In 2020, before signing a contract with the English team, the Uruguayan gave an interview to the Argentine TV channel TyC Sports, spoke about his love for Boca Juniors and his dream of playing for the club in Buenos Aires. When he accepted an offer from United, Argentine TV programs called him a mercenary.

One of Corinthians’ priorities in the market for 2022 is hiring a center forward. Cavani would be an acquisition of technical and moral impact for the squad to dispute the Copa Libertadores, but the board has other names considered more viable. If Talisca goes free on the market, it’s a possibility.

Diego Costa was offered, but the financial effort (about R$ 2 million per month) would also be great. Elkeson, currently at Guangzhou (CHN), is more viable.

While panning for attackers, the team alvinegro is also looking for a defender. According to the club’s directors, these are the two shortcomings of the cast for the next season.

“We have four position players [defensor]. So, the most urgent thing is a center forward and a defender. These are the two positions at the moment,” said Roberto de Andrade.

For now, the only contract that is underway is defensive midfielder Paulinho, who already has an agreement signed with the club and should have his return to Parque São Jorge officialized in the next few days.
